Redding, CA – February 23, 2016 – American Author Mark Twain said it best: “It's spring fever. And when you've got it, you want—oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!” Words could not be truer every spring during “Redding Unrestricted”, when the California city of Redding, located in the majestic region of Shasta Cascade, offers an endless list of activities from mid-April through May that make the heart ache for spring. Find unique adventures from stunning waterfall hikes and blood pumping races, to theater favorites like Mary Poppins, endless classic cars at Kool April Nites, and a windswept sailing regatta. With all this and more packed in a six week span, we think Mark Twain would surely have had spring fever for “Redding Unrestricted!”

Dubbed the “Gem of the U.S. Trails System” by the San Francisco Chronicle, Redding is an outdoor adventurer’s dream offering more than 200 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails all within a 15-mile radius of the city center. Off the trails, kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, and fishing opportunities about throughout the region, with abundant mountain and waterfall vistas around every turn. From music festivals to paddling races, Redding’s list of cultural, sporting, and food & wine events equal fun for everyone, especially during “Redding Unrestricted.”

Located just two hours north of Sacramento and three hours northeast of San Francisco, Shasta Cascade’s bustling hub city of Redding is just the starting point for journeys into one of America’s most spectacular and pristine regional destinations. First Annual Whiskeytown Waterfalls Races during Waterfall Week

The inaugural Whiskeytown Waterfalls Races during Whiskeytown National Recreation Area's annual Waterfall Week offers participants a chance to see as many of the falls as possible in one beautiful trail run. Races include: Four Falls 50K, Three Falls 30K, and “Tougher than a Mudder” 5K (TTAM). Four Falls 50K visits all 4 of Whiskeytown’s major waterfalls while Three Falls 30K visits all except Brandy Creek Falls, reducing the distance by 12 miles. TTAM 5K is for runners who like a challenge but don’t want to run for hours. Picture Perfect Bonus: pictures will be taken at all of the waterfalls!

Waterfall Challenge during National Park Week

This year the National Park Service has selected the theme "National Park Week: Go Wild," and the Whiskeytown Waterfall Challenge is one of the many wild adventures you can have at park sites across the country During Waterfall Week, ranger-led hikes will be offered daily to Whiskeytown, Brandy Creek or Boulder Creek Falls at 9 am, and daily at 2 pm to Crystal Creek Falls, which has Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Accessibility. From diverse wildlife and iconic landscapes to vibrant culture and rich history, Whiskeytown has something for everyone.

Lemurian Shasta Classic Mountain Bike Race

Renowned for its epic loop, huge climbs and long, technical descents, the Lemurian Shasta Classic Mountain Bike Race is one of the oldest and most famous mountain bike races in California. Known as a jewel in Redding’s muddy, well-worn bike helmet, this race draws riders from all over the West. Racers can choose from an extremely challenging and difficult long course, a modest intermediate course, or a technical short course. Downtown Redding turns into a temporary ‘trail’ for this family walking and biking festival where pedestrians bring bikes, skateboards, and  walking shoes to freely enjoy this open street concept. This family friendly event is an “inside-out parade,” where people can participate in activities and enjoy a walk or ride on a beautiful spring Sunday in downtown Redding and enjoy the local retail shops and restaurants. Downtown Redding is also near the Sacramento River National Recreation Trail, so come for more than the day to enjoy all nature has to offer. 

2016 Western Classic

Straight shooters from all around the country take aim in Redding every year when Straight Arrow Bowhunters Inc. presents the Annual Western Classic Trail Shoot and the Annual NFAA Marked 3D National Championship, now in their 33rd and 22nd year, respectively. The Western Classic is the world’s second largest 3-D competition, drawing some of the finest archers, teams, and vendors to Northern California. Archery fans of all ages are invited to join in the festivities at this family-friendly festival, complete with a giant Bigfoot for target practice. The deadline to register by mail for the 2016 Western Classic is approaching. Pre-Registration forms must be postmarked by April 18th to guarantee registration for the tournament. Now in its fifth year, this exciting event takes place on the area’s world renowned trails and requires all participants to use a mountain bike.  All three legs will encounter mostly dirt trails, so helmets are required. Whiskeytown Memorial Regatta

Dinghies, centerboard, multi-hull, and keel boats will race on Whiskeytown Lake over Memorial Day weekend for the 52nd annual Whiskeytown Memorial Regatta. The series of races is free to spectators at Brandy Creek beach; the only thing you pay is the day-use fee for Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. The fee to race in the Regatta is $55. Early entries received by May 21th receive a $10 discount and US Sailing members receive a $5 discount.
