On the Water

Let’s face it, the pool just isn’t going to cut it this summer. Be a hero and bring the excitement back with an outdoor adventure in Redding and fun it up on multiple pristine and inviting lakes and rivers.

A paddler’s dream, Redding is in the heart of UpState California. TIME Magazine labeled Redding as the “unofficial capital of kayaking” for its weird obsession with a paddle, and the best part is there are plenty of places to do it. The local favorite is Whiskeytown National Recreation Area with the sparkling and always full Whiskeytown Lake as the main attraction. Free ranger-led kayak and standup paddleboard tours are available (equipment included!) and the water is so inviting that the rangers also offer free moonlight kayak programs so you can explore the landscape in a different setting, or snap that sunset photo on the lake that will make your friends and family envious until your next trip.

Whiskeytown Lake provides the perfect summer setting. Glide across the water on a kayak to an island or small cove for a private swimming spot, or grab a SUP to cruise on the water. If all gears are shifting into relax mode, lay out a towel or blanket on the sandy shores and gaze off to a tree-line horizon of unspoiled beauty. As the sunniest city in California with more than 300 sunny days per year, Redding’s weather assures you of ideal conditions for your visit. Let the fun continue on Shasta Lake, where you can tie the water skis, wakeboard or tube to your boat and rip up the water for an all-day escapade.

For the more thrill-seekers, you can live on the wild side as you paddle your way through the white water rapids of the Trinity River with guided rafting trips. Strap on a helmet and navigate your way down Class II, III or V rapids. If the slower-moving waters are your preference, stick to the Sacramento River and paddle under the world-famous Sundial Bridge, a Redding landmark.

Don’t let those dog days of summer sneak up on you. Break away from the usual and give yourself a story worth bragging about. Soak up the sun on the water this summer in Redding – Where Fun Meets Adventure.
