Abbey of New Clairvaux Reconstructs Chapter House
The Cistercian monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina have undertaken a project that is quite sacred: the reconstruction of an 800 year old chapter house that was originally built in Ovila, Spain. The stones that had once formed the monastery passed hands several times at one point belonged to William Randolph Hearst before he sold them to the city of San Francisco. The stones were used for various purposes throughout the city but were awarded to the Abbey of New Clairvaux after the persistent monks spent years petitioning and negotiating for them. The project is making slow progress as numerous craftsmen, most of them from Europe, have spent many hours meticulously restoring each aspect of the chapter house. Three of the stone portals have already been completed, giving the Abbey the distinction of the only Cistercian Gothic portal in North America.
Recently Finished Trail Links Two of Redding's Most Recognizable Icons
Outdoor enthusiasts had cause to rejoice earlier this month when a 3-mile stretch of path tying the Sundial Bridge to Shasta Dam was finally completed. The trail now covers an approximately 15 mile distance between the two popular landmarks. The completion of the trail has opened up endless possibilities for people looking for the chance to get out and explore. There are more opportunities for hikers, bike riders, joggers and others to extend their normal routes and try something new. Although the extended trail has only been open since the
beginning of October, hundreds of people have already been out to put the new route to the test. This new path is sure to provide countless opportunities for locals and visitors alike to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the Redding landscape.
