Wildlife Viewing

Redding is located at the very top of the Sacramento Valley, surrounded on three sides by millions of acres of mountainous, diverse, and volcanic landscape. Lakes and streams are plentiful, the trees are tall, and the countryside is vast.

You don't have to travel far to catch a glimpse of wildlife though. The Sacramento River runs right though the heart of Redding, creating a lush landscape that is home to an abundance of animals including beaver, black-tail deer, river otter, and nearly 200 species of migratory and resident birds! Without a boat, it could be difficult to access the river in many places. However, the Sacramento River National Recreation Trail, which meanders along the banks of the river for more than 12 miles, offers a great alternative and is the wildlife viewingperfect place to start your wildlife viewing experience. The trail crosses the world-famous Sundial Bridge which spans more than 700 feet across the river, providing a spectacular vantage point for sighting wildlife as well as enjoying views of the mountains to the west.

Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Castle Crags and Burney Falls State Parks, and the trails around Shasta Lake are also great areas to see black tail deer, several species of birds including an occasional bald eagle or osprey, black bear, squirrel, mule deer, ground squirrel (aka chipmunks), marmot, golden eagle, and other interesting creatures.

Remember, though, that these are wild animals. Athough some can appear friendly or even tame, all wildlife can be unpredictable. NEVER FEED WILD ANIMALS. It's not good for them, and it can put you in harms way. Like the saying goes, "A fed bear is a dead bear." Please, help us protect our wildlife.

Also, check out the CalTrans Eagle Cam starring Redding's own ‘Patriot' and ‘Liberty' live from the nest!
