Winter Activities

Redding sits at the base of the mountains at the extreme north end of the Sacramento Valley.  During the winter months, an easy one hour drive north, west, or east will take you to mountain communities and snow-play attractions that offer wintertime activities for the entire family.

Mt. Shasta--the second highest volcano in the United States at 14,162 feet (4,317m)--offers many year-round outdoor activities including climbing, downhill biking, and scenic drives.  But it is the ski park that attracts the most attention during the winter months.  With 425 acres of skiable terrain, 1,390 vertical feet, 275 inches of annual snowfall, and 32 trails, the Mt. Shasta Board and Ski Park offers something for everyone, from beginner to advanced.  This massive mountain is also home to more than 300 miles of groomed trails, making it a great place to snowmobile, cross country ski, and even dog sled!

To the east sits Lassen Peak, an active volcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc. Located in the heart of Lassen Volcanic National Park this beautiful mountain offers a more moderate and accessible hike to its 10,457 foot summit (3,187m).  No off road vehicles are allowed in this pristine national park; during winter months the road through the Park is closed due to extreme snowfall.  Park rangers offer guided snow shoe hikes through this area.  Cross-country and telemark skiing is also very popular here.

Both of these mountain regions offer abundant snow play areas and mountain communities that offer fuel, restaurants, and hot chocolate to warm you up on those cold, wet winter days!
