Snow mobiling
Hundreds of miles of groomed snow trails can be accessed within an hour's drive of Redding.
To the north, Mt. Shasta offers more than 300 miles of groomed trail which can be accessed from the Pilgrim Creek, Ashpan, and Deer Mountain Snowmobile Parks/Trailheads. The Deer Mountain/Chuck Best Memorial Snowmobile Park is located off US97 northeast of Weed and is the staging area for The Fun Factory Snowmobile Rentals. Pilgrim Creek Snowmobile Park is located off 
Hwy 89, 33 miles east of McCloud. Take Pilgrim Creek Road 5 miles north to the junction of Roads 13 and 19.
To the east, more great trails can be found by visiting the Bogard and Swain Mountain trailheads. Swain Mountain staging area is nine miles north of Westwood on Lassen County Road A-21. There are 60 miles of groomed trails in this area including three loops. Bogard Snowmobile area located on Hwy. 44, 25 miles west of Susanville, has 80 miles of groomed trails. Trails from the staging area include a short sprint to Crater Lake, a 20-mile climb to the top of Antelope Mountain and a 38-mile ride through the forest to Eagle Lake.
A slightly longer drive to the southeast, past the south entrance of Lassen Volcanic National Park, offers great snowmobiling just south of Mineral near Turner Summit and Fredonyer Pass east of Chester. Fredonyer Snowmobile area is near the top of Fredonyer Summit on Highway 36 between Westwood and Susanville. Rides from the staging area include a loop around Hamilton Mountain and trails for more experienced riders to Moonlight Peak and Red Rock.
Off-trail riding is okay in most forest; however, there are several wilderness and non-snowmobile areas which are patrolled by the FS and Sheriff Office-it is your responsibility to know where you are riding. To learn where the designated snowmobile areas are located, pick up a "National Forest Winter Guide" from a U.S. Forest Service office . You can also visit CNSA.net for SnoPark and other permit information.
An approved helmet is required when riding on these trails and all FS lands.
