Snow play

Good snow play areas are widespread throughout the mountainous region surrounding Redding, but the most popular are listed here.

Eskimo Hill off Hwy 44 apx one hour east of Redding is a locals favorite.  Eskimo Hill is the place to be if you're interested in building a snowman, making a snow aSnow Playngel, or riding a tube or toboggan.  A large parking lot offers safe access to this play area.

Directions:  On the north side of Hwy 44/89, approximately 1.5 miles northeast of the Lassen Park turnoff

The mountain town of Mineral off Hwy 36E is about 1.5 hours southeast of Redding.  The town's snow hill offers an exhilarating tube ride while the store and restaurant next door beckon cold visitors inside with hot chocolate or a burger when you get hungry.  Parking is limited-please remember to carefully cross the highway and look both ways before you step out to cross this busy state highway.

Directions:  From Red Bluff (30 minutes south of Redding) take Hwy 36E apx 40 minutes to Mineral.

Lassen Volcanic National Park, just past Mineral north of the Hwy 89 turnoff, is home to the newly opened Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center.  Open all year, daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed Christmas day), this beautiful visitor center offers maps, trail and road guides, field guides, children's activities, Ranger-led programs, an auditorium, exhibits, gift shop, a small restaurant and gift store, and, of course, great access to the snow.  The Visitor Center sits at the base of what was once the Mt. Lassen Apres Ski Lift.
