44th Annual NorCal John Frank Memorial Run

By | 01/06/2014

This March, the SWEAT Running Club of Redding will hold its annual NorCal John Frank Memorial Run. The race remembers a young man who excelled in distance running at Central Valley High School and went on to run for Oregon State before his untimely death. "Frank was one of the best high school distance runners in the U.S. in 1980 and remains something of a local legend in Northern California. At Central Valley High School, he was undefeated during league cross country meets in 1978 and 1979 and won the state championship (Northern Section) his senior year. He won the U.S. Junior Olympic title that year as well, in New Jersey. He was the California co-runner of the year [and] is remembered as a humble guy who put his teammates first." (From Track Focus: Remembering John Frank) This 44th installment of the race will be held on March 1 and will follow the Sacramento River.

The 10 mile race is a USA/TF certified course, and there's a 1 mile and a 3 mile walk/run. $4,500 in prize money is being offered in the 10 Mile race, though runners must be Pacific Assoc of USA/TF members to be eligible. All runners are eligible for all non-monetary prizes and awards. Medals will be handed out to the top 5 in each age group category for both the 10 Mile and 3 Mile. One milers will receive participation ribbons and age groups will be awarded 5 deep (ribbons) for those in grades K-8th. There will also be overall and Master overall awards for both the 10 Mile and 3 Mile races. A one-mile team race will be offered, open to all kids in grades K-8. Each team is made up of 4 members with one of them being of the opposite sex, and the winning team will receive a trophy to display at their school for the next year.

The SWEAT Running Club uses all profits from their races to give college scholarships to local high school seniors. If you're interested in running in this special Redding race, you must register by Wednesday, February 26th. More information can be found HERE. See you at the finish line!
