Shasta Historical Society
The Shasta Historical Society was formed on January 19, 1930, by a group of people who had been collecting then-living pioneers' accounts of their lives in the Gold Rush days. These accounts were then published in the newspaper as The Trails Of 49. Collecting pioneer stories remains one of the activities of the society, but now it is a larger educational, non-profit organization. Its purposes are not only to collect, but to preserve knowledge about the ongoing history of Shasta… More Information

Shasta Lake
Shasta Lake--keystone of the Central Valley Water Project--is the largest manmade reservoir in California, offering over 360 miles of shoreline when full. The rugged country, varied shoreline, and sheer size of Shasta Lake tend to break the lake into different areas, each with its own opportunities, moods, and settings. As you drive the interstate to and from Redding you'll see what appear to be several lakes, but Shasta Lake is actually a series of fingers that connect at big, deep… More Information

Shasta State Historic Park
Six miles west of Redding a row of old, half-ruined, brick buildings remind passing motorists that Shasta City, the Queen City of California's northern mining district, once stood on this site. These ruins and some of the nearby roads, cottages, and cemeteries are all silent but eloquent vestiges of the intense activity that was centered here during the California gold rush. Iron shutters still swing on massive, old hinges before the doors and windows of grass-filled, roofless buildings that once… More Information

Sisson Museum
Mount Shasta City was know as the town of Sisson until it was renamed in 1924. The museum building was erected in 1906 and served as the main hatchery building of the California Department of Fish and Game Mount Shasta Fish Hatchery until it was declared no longer usable 72 years later. A group of civic minded citizens obtained a lease on the building and start-up funding from the state under the umbrellas of the local Chamber of Commerce, and… More Information

Sundial Bridge
Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the Sundial Bridge is an architectural marvel! The glass decked, cable-stayed cantilever suspension bridge reaches 217 feet into the sky, spans 710 feet across the Sacramento River, and forms a working sundial. As an environmentally-conscious structure, Sundial Bridge was intentionally constructed without river footings to leave the salmon-spawning habitat undisturbed. While world-renowned and environmentally sensitive, Sundial Bridge also inspires onlookers with it's "bird in flight" design, symbolizing overcoming adversity. Since its grand opening on July 4, 2004, Sundial Bridge has functioned… More Information
