Seasonal Shows & Snows

Northern CA Destination offers Skiing, Snowshoeing and Mountain Adventures with Holiday Celebrations, including an 1849 Gold Rush Tradition, Performances by Redding City and Moscow Ballet Companies, the Oak Ridge Boys Christmas Show, a Pink Martini Holiday Musical and a New Twist on an Old Holiday Classic

Redding, CA – November 19, 2015 – This winter is the perfect time for holiday revelry in Redding, the hub city of the renowned Shasta Cascade region. Located in northeastern California, at the base of beautiful, snowcapped mountains, Redding’s snow play attractions offer winter activities for the entire family.

Redding is also big on holiday celebrations. You can find a historic state park celebrating a gold rush-era holiday tradition, and two remarkable venues bringing performance art to life throughout the season: Redding’s historic downtown landmark, the Cascade Theatre, was painstakingly restored to the glamour of a bygone era, complete with gold banisters and art deco ceiling murals, while the nearby Redding Civic Auditorium offers a modern venue accommodating 2,000 people at its location on the bank of the Sacramento River. Both boast a full schedule of holiday performances.

Winter Snow and Mountain Fun
Mt. Shasta
, the second highest volcano in the United States, offers year-round outdoor activities, including climbing, downhill biking, and scenic drives, but it's the ski park that attracts the most attention during winter. With 425 acres of skiable terrain, 1,390 vertical feet, 275 inches of annual average snowfall, and 32 trails, the Mt. Shasta Ski Park and resort offers something for everyone, beginner to advanced. Mt. Shasta Ski Park straddles several small volcanic buttes on the lower southern flanks of the massive stratovolcano, with chairlifts running to the top.

Mount Shasta has high expectations for this year’s ski and snowboard season thanks to the recent snowfall. The goal is to open the Ski Park by December 17, and they have already surpassed season pass sales from last year. "[This has been] the best season pass sale we've had in 7 years,” said Marketing Director for Mt. Shasta Ski Park, Michael Smith. “There is a lot of pent-up demand and a lot of people looking forward to coming back." Crews are also watching the forecast and anticipating a great year; Smith is looking for conditions to improve throughout the park, which currently enjoys 6-8 inches of snow at the base and consistent temperatures near 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Lassen Volcanic National Park – Lassen Peak, an active volcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc, stands an hour’s drive east from Redding. Located in the heart of Lassen Volcanic National Park, this beautiful mountain offers a moderate and accessible hike to its 10,457 foot summit. The road through the Park is closed due to snowfall in the winter, making it perfect for snow shoeing and cross-country skiing. The historic Loomis Museum (closed in the winter) is a popular starting place for skiing the 29 mile, snow-covered Lassen Park Highway. The Forest Lake Trail, near the southwest parking area, and the Manzanita Lake Trail, surrounding Manzanita Lake, are the best marked winter trails in the park. For more information, check out the Manzanita Lake Winter Trails Guide

New to snowshoeing? Manzanita Lake offers a ranger-led snowshoe walk Saturdays and Sundays, January 2 through April 3, 2016. The rangers provide snowshoes and teach the basics of snowshoeing, winter survival, and winter ecology. The southwest parking area is also a popular spot to bring the family, the sleds, and the BBQ. You’ll find access to several sledding hills with panoramic views of Lassen Park’s snowcapped mountains.

Cascade Christmas
November 27- December 5, Cascade Theatre
This musical holiday spectacular is for anyone who can’t make it to NYC’s Rockefeller Center! Featuring music and magic that will lift the spirit of the holidays, Cascade Christmas will take you on a singing and dancing journey of the traditional classics we all know and love. Don’t miss this high-spirited holiday spectacle for the whole family.

Moscow Ballet
November 27, Redding Civic Auditorium
Experience the exquisite artistry of world-class Russian dancers, playful puppets, and the unmatched splendor of hand-crafted sets and costumes. The Moscow Ballet’s dance company is the only internationally touring ballet group performing to critical acclaim at over 75 North American cities annually. The New York Times raves, “Real beauty!” and Los Angeles Times, “Bravura expertise!” The award-winning principal dancers and corps de ballet thrill audiences with their dramatic expression and stunning leaps, turns and drops.

The Nutcracker featuring the Redding City Ballet
December 11 & 12, Cascade Theatre
No holiday is complete without experiencing the magic and spectacle of beautifully dressed party guests, the mysterious Godfather Drosselmeyer, and the menacing Rat King. Tchaikovsky’s timeless score evokes images of sparkling snowflakes and waltzing flowers to carry you away with Clara’s dream, as the Redding City Ballet brings The Nutcracker to life.

Oak Ridge Boys Christmas Show
December 13th, Redding Civic Auditorium
It's two shows in one when The Oak Ridge Boys cover their incredible list of hits before transforming the stage into a Christmas show, all in one night! From rollicking Santa songs to heartfelt standards, there is something for everyone. Few country music groups have had the enduring popularity, cultural significance, or crossover success of the Oak Ridge Boys.

Pink Martini Holiday
December 13th, Cascade Theatre
Drawing inspiration from the romantic Hollywood musicals of the 1940s and 50s and adding their own jazz, lounge and multi-cultural flavor, Pink Martini has achieved the perfect balance of class and sass. Don’t miss America’s most diverse “little orchestra” returning for a special, all new holiday show. According to The Washington Post, "this is rich, hugely approachable music, utterly cosmopolitan yet utterly unpretentious. And it seems to speak to just about everybody … from grade-schoolers to grandmothers to the young and hip and beautiful."

A Celtic Christmas
December 18th, Cascade Theatre
Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas returns to the Cascade Theatre stage with new stories, music and dances that celebrate Irish culture and the spirit of Christmas. A Celtic Christmas recreates the joy and innocence of a night before Christmas in a remote farmhouse in Ireland – where neighboring families gather around the fire to grace the wintry night with the haunting melodies of traditional Irish Christmas carols.

Old Classic, New Twist: Christmas Carol - A Love Story
December 19 & 20, Redding Civic Auditorium
Christmas isn't the same without this fascinating tale of spirits, adventure, greed, and Ebenezer Scrooge. What caused this once gentle man to become a scrooge? Was it the love of money, or something (or someone) else perhaps? Fabiano Altamura's Christmas Carol: A Love Story has it all, from gorgeous sets to spooky spirits and music that will have you dancing the Humbug. We know you will enjoy this debut production by Redding Civic Repertory.
